Leaf collection 2011

Crews from the Department of Public Works have begun the second round of residential leaf collection for 2011. This will be the second and final curbside collection for this season.

In addition to the scheduled collection weeks, residents are allowed and encouraged to manage their leaves this season by bagging them, using the large, recyclable leaf bags provided by the Township as a courtesy each fall.

The bags are available at no cost to residents again this year, through a partnership with Subaru of America, Inc. Bagging leaves reduces the cost of leaf-collection by reducing the volume collected manually by DPW. Bagged leaves are collected curbside every week, on the same day as regularly scheduled trash, recycling and yard-waste pickups.

The bags are in stock now on a first-come, first-served basis, and are available at the Mayor’s Office in Town Hall, and at DPW, 1 Perina Blvd.
“Every year, over the course of eight to 10 weeks, DPW crews pick up enough leaves – about 75,000 cubic yards, all together – to fill Lincoln Financial Field to the goalposts,” Platt said. “This is an enormous task to complete, but I would remind residents that there are several steps they can take to make the process more efficient – not the least of which is by taking full advantage of our leaf-bag program.”

Additional residential tips:
• Wait to rake leaves to the curb until the day before the posted pick-up date.
• Leaves should be raked to the curb, rather than in the street; storm drains should be kept free of leaves and debris as much as possible.
• Leaf piles can only be collected if they’re free of branches.
• Avoid parking cars on streets scheduled for leaf collection, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., for safety reasons, and to avoid service interruptions.
• Most importantly, landscaping services should not be putting leaves out for municipal collection. They can deposit leaves, for free, at the Kresson Road ecology site by scheduling a drop-off time through Public Works.

Please note that collection dates are tentative and weather-permitting. Dates will be updated on this page as necessary.
