Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

If available, emergency services personnel are the best trained and equipped to handle emergencies and you should use them. However, following a catastrophic disaster, you and the community may be on your own for a period of time because of the size of the area affected, lost communication, or impassible roads.

CERT training is designed to prepare you to help yourself, your family, and your neighbors in the event of a catastrophic disaster. Because emergency services personnel will not be able to help everyone immediately, you can make a difference by using the training to save lives and protect property.

The training covers the basic skills that are important to know in a disaster when emergency services are not available. With training and practice and by working as a team, you will be able to do the greatest good for the greatest number after a disaster, while protecting yourself from becoming a victim.

The original Cherry Hill CERT Team completed training and was sworn in on May 27, 2003. Since this date, we have trained approximately 45 citizens who are members of our community with various backgrounds but a common interest in public service. In addition to responding to emergencies, CERT team members can help at special events such as the Fourth of July Fireworks, Fire Prevention Nights, dignitary visits and other events.

The Cherry Hill Office of Emergency Management sponsors CERT training throughout the year. Three different programs are offered:

1. Weeknight "Core 8" FEMA Program - This program meets one night a week for eight consecutive weeks followed by a Saturday practical exercise. Subject matter presented includes the following:

    • Emergency Preparedness
    • Fire Safety
    • Emergency Medical Operations
    • Search and Light Rescue Operations
    • CERT Organization
    • Disaster Psychology
    • Terrorism

2. Weekend "Core 8" FEMA Program - This program meets one weekend (Friday night, Saturday and Sunday) followed by a Saturday practical exercise. The subject matter is the same as taught in the Weeknight program.

3. Some supplemental training offered is as follows:
